Oil that drips from cars onto the roadway is a common problem found in cities.  The substance is washed into sewer systems where it can further contaminate the sewage if not properly dealt with.  Separators intended to catch runoff water from streets and remove the oil are used.  These devices use gravity to allow the heavier solids to sink to the bottom as the oil floats to the top.  The layer of oil is then skimmed off to allow the water to continue on unimpeded.

Separators need to be cleaned just like any other wastewater storage device.  Much like a grease trap, a septic pumper is often brought in to remove the oil that has collected over time to prevent it from clogging up and spilling into the sewers.  Disposal of this oil is difficult due to the nature of the chemical.  Most current treatment systems are unable to handle oil or benzene for true cleaning.
